EUMC News! (Dec 7th, 2018)

I owned my own construction business for about 15 years. During that time my crew and I built hundreds of decks, dozens of room additions, and completed countless basement, bathroom, and kitchen remodels. But of all of those projects there are a few that were really unique. One time a customer contacted me and indicated that the doors and windows in their family room addition were not working properly (this was a project by another contractor). This addition was built over an existing deck structure. I surveyed the situation and quickly realized that the problem was due to several piers (think mini foundations) that had failed. Areas of the structure had dropped between 1" to 3", enough to create the problems that the customer had complained about. This project required that my crew and I work under the room addition with very little clearance (just like the photo above). We had to raise the addition, provide temporary supports, excavate new pier holes, pour new concrete, and then install new support posts and beams. This project took about three weeks to complete. During the project, time seemed to move in slow motion. We would often think to ourselves, "why is it taking so long to complete this?"

The truth is, the only way to approach this project was in a 'slow and steady' pace because of the limitation of the space. Now here's the interesting thing. To the average person, this room addition did not look any different three weeks later. The hundreds of man hours of work was hidden from sight; no one could see all of the improvements that had taken place underneath this room addition.

In many ways, this reminds me of 2018 at Eureka UMC. We have been completing a lot of foundation work. We have been excavating and pouring new foundations. Teams have been tirelessly serving 'under the structure' of the church. For example, our Vision Team was named on January 31st and this team has met faithfully and consistently, most often multiple times each month, and for several hours each meeting. All of this because of their passion to discern God's unique vision for Eureka UMC. This has been an amazing journey and the team is excited to share this AMAZING new vision with the congregation beginning in late January 2019.

Our Celebrate Recovery Team formed in April 2018. They traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan for an intensive training conference. They have visited other churches who have started a Celebrate Recovery ministry. They have been meeting for months to seek God's direction, to discover new leaders, and are beginning the process of equipping and training these new leaders in order to launch this incredible and much needed ministry in April 2019. One. Full. Year. Without this strong foundation, the rest of the structure may be compromised.

And there are yet other teams (Congregational Care, Hospitality, Leadership Development, Discipleship Pathway, and the Family Room Worship team) that have been serving tirelessly in 2018 in order to 'shore up' the foundation at Eureka UMC in preparation for the amazing things that God desires to accomplish through us.

Preparing a foundation for a new structure takes time and effort. Installing a new foundation under an existing structure takes even more time and effort and the results of this important work are not always clearly or initially visible. All of this to say, to the members and friends of Eureka UMC, "thank you for your patience."

And a big thank you to the DOZENS of faithful team members and foundation builders. 2019 is going to be an amazing year!

 Grace and peace,

Pastor Tim

fb share.jpg

This is the best time of the year to invite someone to church. The. Best. Time. It's not the only time; you can invite someone to church anytime! But there is something about Christmas that demonstrates people are much more likely to come if someone just invites them. One of the ways that you can invite people is by simply 'sharing' our weekly Faceook posts. During December, there will be a new, short video to share each week. Here is the link to this week's video:

https://www.facebook.com/EurekaUMC/videos/465944590597735/

Sharing is easy (it takes less than 1 second) and it is powerful. When you share, you reach people exponentially.  When one person 'shares' a Eureka UMC post, it will reach on average, 150 people. Can we achieve 50 shares this week and each week during the month of December? We can EASILY 'share' our way to reaching 30,000 people with the Good News of Jesus Christ before Christmas Eve. To put it into perspective, we could reach the 30,000 people that live within 5 miles of Eureka UMC with a postcard. We could certainly do that...and it would cost us over $12,000.00. Or we can just share one post each week and reach 30,000 people and it will cost us nothing.

Thank you in advance for 'sharing' our way towards reaching 30,000 people on social media this Christmas Season!

LAST WEEK we reached 1800 people on social media
THIS WEEK we have reached 4700 people on social media
NEXT WEEK--let's see if we can reach 7500!

December 30 "The Wonder Years"

Have you ever wondered what Jesus' life was like during his 'middle school' years? We will explore a unique passage from Luke 2 that gives us the only glimpse that we have of Jesus during his youth.

descisions.jpg

We will begin 2019 with a compelling sermon series, "Decisions: Burdens or Opportunities". We all face decisions in our lives:

"Where should I go to school?"
"Who should I marry?"
"Should I start a family?"
"What is my career path?"
"How do I care for my aging parents?"
"How do I handle end of life decisions?"

We will explore how to approach these, and other decisions, through the lens of God's Word.

January 6: "Making Decisions for Me"  Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

January 13: "Making Decisions with Others" Proverbs 16:1-3 MSG

January 20: "Making Decisions With My Church" Matthew 28:16-20 NIV

Blue Christmas: When Christmas Hurts

For those looking for Comfort Hope and Wholeness

We all experience losses in life that leave us feeling anything but hopeful during this time of year.  Christmas can be a time when many of us need the reassurance and comfort that God is with us no matter what. Perhaps you are grieving over the loss of a loved one, struggling with illness, or experiencing the loss of a job.  You may wonder how you will get through the holidays.  If you or someone you know, needs extra reassurance this season, I want to invite you to join us for A Blue Christmas Service: When Christmas Hurts.  We will gather for worship in the sanctuary on Sunday December 16th at 6:30 p.m.

Proclamation Brass Christmas concert schedule:

Sunday, December 16th:  Christmas carols between services and after the 9:45 service in the commons area.

Monday, December 17th:  we will play at Marymount Manor, 313 Augustine Rd, Eureka from 7:00-8:00 pm in the activity room. As you know Jim Branscum is there and seeing that he and his wife were always big supporters of our group we wanted to bring some cheer to them this holiday season. Our concert will focus mainly on Christmas music but will also include some favorites.

ambassadors of harmony.jpg

The Christmas season doesn't begin in St. Louis without the Ambassadors of Harmony!

This December, the Ambassadors of Harmony chorus will once again rekindle the joy and magic of the holidays with its always popular Sounds of the Season concert.
Celebrate with the Ambassadors as the chorus puts on five heartwarming concerts filled with musical favorites that will get you in the spirit. The show has become a yearly tradition over the past three decades by combining comedy and the lighter side of popular holiday songs with classic carols and sacred music that tell the story of the season.

We invite you to join Sean Stewart, our choir director and a member of the Ambassadors of Harmony, on Sunday, December 9th at 7pm for this amazing performance. If you would like to attend, please contact choir member Carol Wellons at cwellons@sbcglobal.net for tickets. Transportation will be provided through the Eureka UMC bus.

With just a few weeks left in 2018, we ask you to please review your year-to-date giving statements that were mailed today (Thursday). We thank you for your generosity and ask you to prayerfully consider how you can help "close the gap" so that we can finish 2018 on a solid financial footing.
